Mascara Search

I am on the hunt for a great, yet inexpensive, mascara. Over the next few weeks I'll be trying some out and reviewing them, but if you have any suggestions please leave them in the comments section or email me. I want to find one that I love as much as my Lancome mascara, but is available at the drugstore.

I've got the Fever!

Results: I tried Spotpink, a shimmery light pink. The color pigmentation was just okay. It could have been the shade I tried, but I was underwhelmed with the coverage. However, I loved the shine; it was almost a vinyl look. The feel of it is very creamy and a little sticky--not tacky or goopy, but it had a slight stickiness to it, which is probably the reason that it lasted for hours. After the first hour the shine started to fade, but even that is long time for me. After eating, I could still feel and see the gloss on my lips, though it was very subtle. All in all, I really liked it.

Return to Origins Program

Origins is introducing a recycling program the end of the month and I hope it's a great success! Truth be told, I never recycle my cosmetic products--I don't even think about it, but I'm definitely going to start now.

-Everyday packaging accounts for approximately 1/3 of all landfill waste.
-Most community recyclers only take items made from materials that are easily recognized - such as soda and water bottles.
-Cosmetic and toiletry bottles, tubes, caps and jars among those items not easily recognized and therefore not often recycled.

"Starting March 29, 2009, bring your empty cosmetic tubes, bottles and jars, etc. - regardless of brand - to your nearest Origins retail store or department store counter nationwide [excludes Nordstrom]. All returned packaging will be sent back to a central location where products will be recycled or used for energy recovery. Beauty In, Toxins Out

Last month MD Skincare launched their Beauty In Toxins Out Natural Beauty Collection. "The full line is a revolutionary approach in body treatment and revitalization. The collection will successfully reverse damage our skin suffers from exposure to environmental pollutants. This is accomplished through a daily showering, bathing and moisturizing experience. Achieve results on a whole new level with high concentrations of botanical extracts, essential oils, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals along with a proprietary blend of detoxifying chelators."

I love that the line is all natural, and the Detox Duo left my skin hydrated and silky, but there was nothing amazing about this line that you can't find elsewhere for less. Ultimately, I'd buy it if it was on sale, but otherwise I'll stick to my Mountain Glow body exfoliator.

LashFusion Lash Plump

A lesson that's been very hard for me to learn is that the most expensive products are not necessarily the best, they're just the...well...the most expensive. Take, for instance, Fusion Beauty LashFusion. The packaging sounds very scientific and convincing: "Protein nanospheres strengthen and protect lashes from the inside out, increasing moisture and elasticity while also shielding lashes with a protective buffer that defends against environmental aggressors such as pollutants, smoke, and UV light, as well as mechanical damages such as curling and pulling." For $39 I want full, thick lashes, but this mascara was clumpy and flaky. It never dried completely, so it would run whenever I would touch my eyes. There are much better mascaras for a lot less money. Save your money on this product.

VS Beauty of Brazil Collection

Victoria's Secret just launched their limited edition Beauty of Brazil collection. My favorite item in this collection is the Silky Bronzing Powder. Available in two shades (I used Ipanema), I was pleasantly surprised by the sheer color and light shimmer. It wasn't overpowering, and gave my skin the sun-kissed radiance it promised. Plus, how can you not love the cute animal print packaging?

Katie Holmes Long Hairstyle

Seeing Katie Holmes with long extensions at the Valkyrie premiere reminds me how cute and vivacious she used to be. Not that there's anything wrong with her short hair, but she seems so much older with it. I love her long hair and I hope this becomes a permanent change. Love it!

Kate Somerville Checks Into Sephora

Kate Somerville is one of the most loved celebrity facialists. Her products have a cult following, and with good reason--they work. This is an all-around great line, and the best part is that it's now available at Sephora! My favorite product in her line is the ExfoliKate. It's an exfoliating treatment that works physically and enzymatically to combat acne and blackheads, reduce discoloration, and polish skin for a smooth complexion. I should warn you that it's best used at night as the enzymes make your face tomato-red, but the smooth glowing skin you have in the morning will convince you it's worth it.

Do You Want to Look Like Lindsay Lohan?

Lindsay Lohan is coming out with her own line of self-tanners. Is anyone else as scared about this as I am? The notoriously orange-streaked starlet teamed up with tanning expert Lorit Simon to form her company, called Sevin Nyne. Why Sevin Nyne? It's misspelling of her favorite numbers (whatever).

The product's active ingredient is DHA, and the spray doesn't contain any chemicals. Other ingredients include caramel, Chardonnay extracts, gogi berry, and a sugar-coconut base. The color takes five hours to develop, and lasts for four to five days. Available April 15th on Sephora.com for $35. Will you try it?

My love of the Tocca scent Montcristo is well documented; the only problem being that while I love the scent for a candle, I wouldn't want to walk around smelling like it. The Ultimate Make-Up Remover

I have tried dozens of make-up removers, but none work as well for me as DHC's Deep Cleansing Oil. You would think that rubbing an olive oil based product on your face would be counter-productive, but this stuff is amazing. Ylang Noir Pur Liquid Marseille Soap

How cool would this soap look by a bathroom or kitchen sink? The dark bottle looks like something you'd find on the shelf at an antique store in an exotic land. I am absolutely in love with the product, which smells exactly like you would expect--a Ylang-Lang based scent that combines intense floral notes with the deep, sensual notes of wood and leather.

I don't have enough amazing things to say about the Remington Emi Style System Dryer with Airwave Attachment. Currently on sale for only $20.99 at drugstore.com, it's a wavy-haired girls dream--it provides frizz-free beach wave every time! To use, place 1-inch sections of hair in the clear plastic vent and turn the dryer on. It creates a wind tunnel the twirls each section into beautiful waves. Normally when I have the dryer on high it creates frizz, but with this product it just creates perfect curls--it saves tons of time, reduces frizz and static, and looks as close to Giselle waves as you can get without a curling iron.

How To Do It:

Face-

-Apply Smoothing Base for Line over whole face.

-Apply Cream Foundation over whole face and blending in from the center of the face outward in several circular motions.

-Apply Concealer to dark circles or any imperfections. With the Brilliant Enhancer, two clicks should release enough formula to draw a line from the cheek bone to the temple, draw a line down the bridge of the nose and dot the tip of the chin. Blend in. Apply excess to the inner corner of the eye.

-Apply Cheek Color Duo in Shade 5 to the apples of the cheeks and blend upwards towards the hairline.

-Highlight the cheekbone with the lightest shade of the Cheek Duo by applying the highlight to the top of the cheekbone near the eye.

Eyes-

-Using Eye Color Quad 20 apply shade C, the lightest shade, to the entire eyelid to create a base.

-Apply shade B from the lash line to the crease of the eyelid.

-Apply shade A, the darkest shade, across the lash line.

-For accents, apply shade D, to the crease at the inner corner and to the crease at the outer corner of the eye. Also try Shade 10 or Shade 19.

-Line the eye subtly or dramatically with the Intensifying Cream Eyeliner. Draw a line along the upper lash line from the outer corner to the inner corner of the eye.

-Complete the look by generously applying Volume Mascara in Shade 1 to both upper and lower lashes.

Lips-

-Apply Extra Silky Lipstick 119. Other options are 114 for a berry tint or 112 for a barely there nude.
